SH7009 building of the PANAMA CANAL, W D Boyce photo
Postcard: Panama Canal Titled: Photo by W D Boyce, but if you look at the card under magnification you will see pixels Showing: a lot of construction material Back: This picture shows the building of the great Pedro Miguel twin locks of the Panama Canal. The locks are great basins, made of concrete with steel gates weighing thousands of tons at each end and are to be used to lift ships from the level of the oceans to the higher level of the water in the Canal as it crosses the Isthmus. When a ship comes in from the Pacific Ocean it is towed into the first of the locks shown here and the huge gates shut behind it; then water is allowed to flow in until the ship is raised to the level of the next lock, into which it is towed and the operation repeated, raising it to the level of the Canal, when under its own steam it will sail thought the Canal to the great Gatun locks, where the operation just described is reversed and the ship is lowered to the level of the Atlantic Ocean Publisher or Manufacturer: photo by W D Boyce Series or Number: N Postmarked: N Divided/Undivided back: D Used: N Condition: corners in good shape
Note: Pix have been taken with the card inside a plastic sleeve and the number is on the sleeve, not on the card. The plastic may have distorted the image just a little or there may be marks or shadowing from what I use to take my pictures on, so therefore if you would like a better pix sent directly to you – just ask.
